I hope your weekend was wonderful and that those of you that live in the States managed to finish many things with your extra day off.
As usual, I am still running behind on several projects and it also didn't help--though it was definitely an experience--that I added one more thing to the list--putting up a beehive.
Yes, you read that correctly. And of course, if you've been here for any given amount of time, you know that my secret life involves farming--or any semblance therein. So, since my landlady wanted to get bees and I am the Jill of All Trades...up the hive went, onto our roof. I had my landlady's coworker and friend also helping....and it actually went well!
Here are some pics (click on any to enlarge):
Here is my landlady's coworker Dwaine. His expression might be because he is nervous, as he's never hived bees before. Or, he can just be looking at me funny because I'm basically like: "don't we look rad in our bee suits?"
Finally, when bees are hived, I install the outer cover. They are doing great! And NOW you know what I do when I don't make dolls, dance, write or...umm...sleep! :)
I'll have another post on this on my farmy blog , so stop on by!

Oooohhh YUM! I can almost taste he honey from here.
Oh man, you're making me want bees!!!! I'm already researching getting a few chickens, guess I'll have to add beekeeping to my list:)
Zan, you are an amazing woman! And, yes - you do look rad in that bee suit!
When I first saw the pic, I thought you were going to be hunting down weird
viral bugs "hello Adromeda Strain!"
Heehee...thanks guys!
Melissa, I can almost taste the honey too! Haha, I am sure the bees can, too! :)
Jen--yes! Get bees! I'll come over and help you hive them! :)
Sue--haha! My landlady wasn't in town and so I sent her pics of the hiving, and she said we looked "ready to launch to the moon" in our suits! :D
Wow, Zan, I am so impressed. That is really a process. I am interested, you said you put it on your roof? Are you in a city or out in the country? I would love to have a hive of bees but I think my yard is too small and to close to neighbors. Really fascinating though. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences!
You are brave. I like bees, but not that close up! How cool that you did that though.
Oh Zan, you are a bee charmer :)
I guess it's okay to wear white now huh? That is SO cool!
oh my goodness ... I am so very, very envious! I knew a girl in Baltimore (city, believe it or not) that had a hive and ever since knowing her I have secretly held onto the hope that some day/one day I'd have one, too. Last Christmas one of our regular clients brought me a bottle of honey from a hive on one of her lots ... it was SO good that it was gone in less than a week. :) Enjoy your bees ... I wish them happy home making.
Oh Zan...I do so want too have bees, but I know it would not go over big with my co-op association...they turn my mini fountian idea image what they would say if I brought up the bees..LOL...oh well I'll just have to wait until I have my own little cottage...have a honey of a day - and may sweet things come your way! YAY! She's got bees!! You know I thought about you the other day when those folks were trapped in the Game Stop in Manhattan because of the bee infestation. Did you know that the NYPD has a bee "liason" on staff?! LOL
I am so glad you got your bees. I know you are excited! I'm gonna be on the look out for 'Honey for Sale' cause I so want some!
Why, exactly would you think that is not art? I can't imagine the skill, let alone the guts, that bee keeping requires!
Hey Melissa, I never thought of it that way....hmmm..I think you are right! :)
Just to answer some questions--I live in the city smack in the middle of a whole bunch of people..if you put the hive on your roof or somewhere unseen by your neighbors, as long as ordinances allow for it, you can have bees. You could also "bribe" your neighbors into tolerating the bees by promising them honey at the end! :)
Marlene! I can come over next year and set one up for you! :)
You are absolutely amazing!! Being allergic, I have a love/fear thing going on with bees myself...I think they're so magical, and do try to plant to attract them. But once they're here, I give them a wide berth, haha.
(LOVE to paint them too!)
Can't wait to see how this progresses, and read future posts about all that delicious honey!

Thanks Carolee! Oh dear, that is a shame about the allergies, but I know several people that were curious about hiving them, but couldn't help because of the allergies, also!
I will definitely keep everyone posted :)
